One of my favorite things working in photography is to see families and children changing through the years.  I am able to capture that moment in time that they will cherish forever and I feel pride in the children’s accomplishments through the years.  An example I wanted to share was of a young woman named Victoria Alessandra, who I first started photographing when she was only 6 months old.  Here is a photo I took of her when she was only 5 years old and you can see how happy she was to be center stage and performing just came to her naturally.

After being in gymnastics for 7 years and competing heavily for 4 of those years, Victoria fractured her back and was forced to give up her passion.  She had always had another passion for performance and music, especially any type of rock music.  She currently sings and is practicing guitar.  Her song “Waiting to See” is available on iTunes.  She sang all the vocals including backing vocals and harmonies.  Victoria is currently recording her second song, which she wrote the lyrics to.

The photos below are just a few of the images that we had so much fun creating, they were even incorporated into her music video.  I look forward to hearing her next song and seeing her future accomplishments.

I love the romance, love, and laughter that is represented by Valentine’s Day and I always enjoy capturing this special moment in time for my clients.  It also reminds me of how much I appreciate my own family and friends.

In November I photographed the Johnson family who were the recipients of a new home, courtesy of The Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

Their family humor and positive attitude is what everyone should feel no matter what their economic situation.

Love and kindness is evident in the relationship that Elaine and Eric Johnson share.  Their children reflect this joy.  I got a chance to talk with their daughters and I was glad to see such young people show appreciation not just for the new home they had just received but also for the fun and loving relationship their parents shared.  As I was photographing Elaine and Eric together the girls were giggling and saying “Awww….Love”.

It was truly a pleasure to capture their family portraits.

The Happy Faces Project was installed and looks beautiful on the walls at Texas Children’s Hospital as you walk into the Ronald McDonald House.  What a joy it was to photograph these young patients who have been treated at Texas Children’s Hospital.  They truly are inspirational individuals and I hope these portraits convey even the smallest fraction of light these children bring into the world.  Thank you for the honor to photograph you and for the smiles that will be brought upon any one who views them. This has been one of the most amazing experiences for me!  For the last 3 months I have been photographing young patients who have been treated at TCH.  Their stories, their cheerful attitudes, their perseverance under adverse circumstances have made me realize that I should count my blessings and never ever complain about anything ever again!

We will be mounting this show (The Happy Faces Project) at Texas Children’s Hospital in the fall.  It will be displayed on the walls as you come out of the Ronald McDonald House.  I will keep you posted as to when the photographs are up.

Okay… Question: What is the hardest assignment?

Answer: When I get a call and the client tells me they have a 2 year old and a puppy!

Amazingly we seem to get great results even with the hard assignments.  I guess because I have been the cover photographer for Pet Talk Magazine for the last 5 or so years and we have gotten lots of practice with animals.  However, TWO is an interesting stage of a child’s life.  Everything is “NO”.  But we are able to overcome those issues by knowing how to entertain kids.

First, you have to know what is funny to a kid.  I am also lucky to have done photography for two child development books.  The author of the books taught me about all the stages that a child goes through in their life.  This has been very helpful to me over the years and has helped me to relate to kids on their level.  I think you really have to like kids too.  Some photographers just don’t “get” kids.  I think kids are wonderful jewels that are fun to watch and are so special….. each and everyone.
