Wow!  What a great response to the “New Year, New You, New Facebook Photo!”

Even Jennifer, one of my staff members here at Evin Thayer Studios, had me take her new Facebook photo.  See below a before and after on the photo retouching we did for her.  Due to Houston humidity her hair was unruly and we smoothed it out.  We also slimmed her cheek a little; everyone can use a little bit of the Evin Thayer magic.

One of my favorite things working in photography is to see families and children changing through the years.  I am able to capture that moment in time that they will cherish forever and I feel pride in the children’s accomplishments through the years.  An example I wanted to share was of a young woman named Victoria Alessandra, who I first started photographing when she was only 6 months old.  Here is a photo I took of her when she was only 5 years old and you can see how happy she was to be center stage and performing just came to her naturally.

After being in gymnastics for 7 years and competing heavily for 4 of those years, Victoria fractured her back and was forced to give up her passion.  She had always had another passion for performance and music, especially any type of rock music.  She currently sings and is practicing guitar.  Her song “Waiting to See” is available on iTunes.  She sang all the vocals including backing vocals and harmonies.  Victoria is currently recording her second song, which she wrote the lyrics to.

The photos below are just a few of the images that we had so much fun creating, they were even incorporated into her music video.  I look forward to hearing her next song and seeing her future accomplishments.

I love the romance, love, and laughter that is represented by Valentine’s Day and I always enjoy capturing this special moment in time for my clients.  It also reminds me of how much I appreciate my own family and friends.

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to catch up with Dr. “Red” Duke.  I photographed him in the surgery room at Memorial Hermann.  I even had to put on scrubs or as they call them “bunny suits”.

As we walked the hospital hallways he greeted everyone with enthusiasm and it really is apparent he is still the star of the show at Memorial Hermann.  His energy and devotion to helping other people make him a true Texas hero.  He established Houston’s Hermann Hospital Life Flight operations in 1976 and remains the medical director of its trauma and emergency services.

When I was photographing him about a decade ago he started up the conversation by saying “You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, so just do the best you can.”  His real Texas character and down-home nature make him truly one of a kind.  I know everyone in the Houston area is very grateful for his incredible service to our community.

Wow, I am constantly amazed at my job!

Last week I was at Memorial Hermann Hospital to photograph Dr. Michele Johnson, a neurosurgeon.  I got to observe in the operating room her doing nerve and brain surgery.  How many people get that opportunity?  Very interesting!

Immediately after that photography session, I was back at my studio photographing ballroom dancers.  And then late that afternoon I photographed the K-9 unit of the Houston Police Department.  Now that’s a diversified day!

I am very honored to be one of the featured artists in our great city’s 175th anniversary celebration presented by FotoFest and Houston Center for Photography.  I have a great amount of devotion to Houston and it’s people and I would not be where I am today without you.

PEOPLE: Contemporary Photographers Looking at Houston

How can an art exhibit reflect the people of Houston as the city celebrates its 175th anniversary? When confronted with this question, the staff at FotoFest and Houston Center for Photography turned to contemporary artists who have created bodies of work about the people of Houston. These photographers explore the cultures, sub-cultures, interest groups, and leaders that make up the intricate and diverse fabric of Houston. This exhibition is about the 15 photographers as much as it is about the individuals portrayed in these images. The photographers have sought people out, camera in hand, because they want to document the stories of individuals and groups of people. Some find inspiration in their subjects, some capture aspects of families and communities, while others highlight Houston’s well-known and unsung leaders.

When asked, “What’s your favorite part about Houston?” the answer is most often, “The people.” PEOPLE: Contemporary Photographers Looking at Houston celebrates the people of Houston.
