I love the romance, love, and laughter that is represented by Valentine’s Day and I always enjoy capturing this special moment in time for my clients.  It also reminds me of how much I appreciate my own family and friends.

Wow, I am constantly amazed at my job!

Last week I was at Memorial Hermann Hospital to photograph Dr. Michele Johnson, a neurosurgeon.  I got to observe in the operating room her doing nerve and brain surgery.  How many people get that opportunity?  Very interesting!

Immediately after that photography session, I was back at my studio photographing ballroom dancers.  And then late that afternoon I photographed the K-9 unit of the Houston Police Department.  Now that’s a diversified day!

People are always commenting on how beautiful the photos are for the Houston Pet Talk Magazine covers.  They assume we use “model” dogs that are perfect and obey every command.  To be honest most of the animals we work with are fairly well behaved but they are still people’s pets and it does require a certain amount of creative effort to get those perfect images.

Last week I photographed Major League Baseball legend Nolan Ryan.  At age 64 and standing 6’2” he is a powerful presence.  But under all that tough Texas cowboy exterior beats a heart of gold and a soft spot for all creatures.

Nolan has joined forces with Friends For Life, a No Kill animal organization here in Houston that redefines “adoptable”.  They rescue, medically treat, and place animals into loving homes. They accept animals of all breeds, all ages and in all health situations. They believe No life is disposable.  They have some unique ideas they call “thinking outside the shelter”.  Next time you are at Memorial Park (2nd Saturday of every month) check out their mobile adoption van.  While you are at the park you want to run and get exercise, they have adoptable dogs onsite and ready to run!

Congratulations to Michelle Mantor of Houston Pet Talk Magazine for writing such a great article on this month’s issue, featuring John Paul DeJoria of Paul Mitchell Systems, John Paul Pet, Patrón Tequila and more.

I traveled up to Austin to photograph John Paul DeJoria at his home for this article.  I love my job!  I get to meet so many interesting people and John Paul is certainly one of them.  John Paul has started a new company that carries products for your pets.  They jokingly say that no human was harmed in the testing of their products.  He loves his dogs and lives on Lake Austin on a beautiful piece of property.  He also owns a game preserve outside of Austin.  We did not get to go to that location this time but I look forward to seeing it next time.

Once again I had the opportunity to photograph Annise Parker (our current Mayor of Houston).  I have photographed Mayor Parker when she was a City Councilwoman, when she was Houston City Comptroller, and several times now that she is Mayor of Houston.  This time it was for Pet Talk magazine on an article for BARC and its new animal adoption facility.  Look for it in an upcoming issue of Houston Pet Talk magazine!

I have been doing the photography for the cover for Houston Pet Talk Magazine for a number of years.  Over time I have gotten to meet a lot of people that are pet lovers.  I have found some people have gravitated more toward cats, while others toward dogs.  Each species is interesting and lovable in their own way!  I am one of those people who actually have had both a cat and a dog.  After my dog Tobby passed away a few years ago, I was pet less for a few years.

This year I decided to adopt a cat named Hunter from an animal rescue organization called HOPE.  I call him a Cat/Dog (laugh)  Why?  Yes… he is a cat but he is a Dog like Cat.  He follows me everywhere and has to be right next to me at all times.  He even comes to me when I call him!  I found him yesterday lying on his back, legs stretched out like a dog.  I really lucked out with this cat.  He is funny, smart & affectionate!  Hunter is a male cat, which I understand from experts bond better than females.  Having had both, I would be inclined to agree!

Now the difference between dogs and cats is that with dogs, they are there to try to please you, where cats feel you are there to please them (laugh again).  Okay, so now I  have to find a dog that pleases the cat!  Any suggestions?
